The essay is not a writing assignment. It’s your student’s best opportunity to be seen.

Here’s the way I like to think about college essay coaching. A grant proposal doesn’t just list what someone has done. It makes the case for why they matter, why their work matters, and why they deserve the investment. The college essay isn’t so different. Impressive resumes are everywhere; a student with something real to say is not.

Most students know more about themselves than they think. What gets in the way is figuring out where to start, trusting that their story is worth telling, and putting it on the page in their own voice. That’s what we work on together.

What Makes This Different

An essay coach who thinks like an artist, listens like a therapist, and knows what admissions readers are looking for.

My training in visual arts taught me that the strongest work begins long before the making. It starts with critically thinking through and talking through the concept. For years I worked with teens using photography and video as tools for telling their own stories. That experience, combined with a therapist’s ear for what lies beneath the surface, shapes how I approach the essay process: before touching a single prompt, I sit with students in conversation, listening for the details, moments, and ideas that make their story worth telling.

Having sat on admissions and scholarship review committees, I understand what makes an essay resonate and what makes it disappear into the pile.

Why Work With Me

An investment that pays forward.

The work students do here extends well beyond the application. Learning to write about yourself with clarity and confidence carries forward into scholarship essays, college interviews, internship applications, and beyond. Many students look back on this process as one of the most meaningful parts of their senior year, because they came out knowing themselves better.

Six reasons families choose Modern College Counseling for essay support.

  1. I bring a background in human development and identity that most essay coaches simply don’t have. I understand the adolescent experience, not just the admissions process.
  2. I have direct experience on admissions and scholarship review committees. I know how essays are read, what resonates, and what gets forgotten.
  3. The words are always your student’s. My role is to guide, shape, and refine, never to write for them.
  4. Students leave this process knowing themselves better. That clarity shows up in interviews, scholarship applications, and beyond.
  5. I take the pressure off parents. You don’t need to be the editor, the deadline enforcer, or the sounding board. That’s my role.
  6. The investment pays forward. Better essays mean stronger applications, potential scholarship opportunities or merit aid, and a student who knows how to advocate for themselves in writing for years to come.

What We Work On

What essay coaching actually looks like.

Depending on your student’s needs, we work on some or all of the following:

Personal Statement
The 650-word Common App essay is the centerpiece of most applications. We start not with the prompt but with the student, uncovering what story is worth telling and why it matters.
UC Personal Insight Questions
Four questions, 350 words each. Deceptively simple. I help students choose the right prompts and answer them with specificity and confidence.
Supplemental Essays
“Why this school?” questions require real research and genuine reflection. I help students write supplements that are specific, sincere, and hard to forget.
Activities List
Often overlooked, the activities list is prime real estate. I help students frame their involvement in ways that add dimension to the rest of the application.
